Life is tough and extremely stressful sometimes. Multiple tasks and obligations, and endless worries keep us running constantly. Kids, parents, loved ones, the home, the colleague, cleaning, cooking, fixing. Maybe even finding time and space to read this text, was a challenge. If so, I invite you to take another few deep breaths and gently bring your focus here for a couple minutes. Give yourself this time, this moment. It may help!

Maybe you are going through a challenging transition in life? Or perhaps you were just diagnosed with an illness, or told that you need to change your lifestyle to avoid getting one. Or maybe you have been living with chronic illness for years. You may experience bothersome, or even debilitating symptoms, and often, you have to deal with large amounts of information, guidelines, appointments, medications or treatments.In addition, whether you have an illness or not, stress tends to elicit an array of emotions, from fear and uncertainty to anger or depression. This is understandable and normal, but none the less challenging. In these circumstances, the thought of being healthy might be non-existing, and the idea of “self-care” and wellness is nothing but hypothetical.

As a former physician, I know, and have seen, what a detrimental effect illness and stress can have on the ability to take care of oneself, yet I would argue that these are circumstances in which self-care is more important than ever.
